Therapies and Treatments

In essence, massage is just a term which captures a whole array of soft tissue techniques, both eastern and western, which I use to get your body moving and functioning optimally. In addition to the various massage techniques I often combine the use of a range of methods such as neuromuscular and proprioceptive techniques, positional release and gentle joint mobility to achieve the movement we need.  A major focus is on the fascial or connective tissue of your body and much of my intention in how I work is with this system. Your bony alignment and postural shape is written within the fascia of your body and it is here that we work together to facilitate positive changes.

Therefore no treatment is fixed.  I will provide the most beneficial and effective treatment for you which may involve a combination of the different techniques within the one session.  All techniques target the soft tissues of the body, are specific in nature and can vary from subtle to firm in application.

A general or detailed postural and physical assessment will be provided as part of the consultation. A treatment plan will be tailored to suit your short and longer term needs.

Ive put together some general material below to help answer any questions you may have regarding the particular soft tissue massage and mobilisation techniques and why and how I use them.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss any quieries or concerns you may have with no committment to making an appointment.

Remedial & Deep tissue Massage
The term remedial refers to variety of western techniques applied for a specific therapeutic effect that will enhance optimal function for the whole body. The aim is to facilitate the healing process, which begins at the cellular level aiding soft tissues in repairing and restoring functional integrity.

Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy

The word 'myofascia' captures the bundled together, inseparable nature of muscle tissue (myo-) and its accompanying web of connective tissue (fascia). Myofascia is the tough, fibrous connective tissue glue that holds us together. It spider webs throughout our body, forming organ cavities, membranes, coverings for our bones, muscle and circulatory system. It makes up ligament, tendon and scar tissue. Myofascia is made up of elastin, collagen, and a liquid component called ground substance. Elastin provides a degree of pliability to the system. Collagen gives this tissue its strength. A core aspect of fascia is that it has been found to be highly innervated and contain specialised mechanoreceptors. This means fascia is a vital source of proprioceptive feedback for the central nervous system which enables healthy movement of your body.

Possible the most important aspect for you to know about myofascia is that it creates the continuous functional landscape of your body and because of this any tension or strain experienced anywhere in the body is distributed via this connective web. This explains why any postural compensation, either due to injury or life-style, can impact other areas of the body.  If this change or bind in the myofascia is not recognised and treated this can remain and cause disfunction in the body possibly for years. This is why in any work that I do with my clients I have a whole-body approach to treatment.

Trigger points are fibrous nodules within taut bands of tissue that are painful and give rise to a predictable pattern of pain when compressed (Travell and Simons, 1998). Trigger points can be the root cause of a multitude of chronic pain complaints and it is not uncommon for anyone to have some present in their bodies.  The location, how long they have been there and cause will dictate the problems they can cause.  Myofascial and trigger point release is essentially a manual therapy that uses sustained pressure into the myofascial tissue of the body to restore function and motion and eliminate pain.
